While the Birmingham Canals are now an underrated destination for travelers in the UK, they held important significance during the Industrial Revolution. The canals were used to transport iron, coal, and other goods across the city. Before railroads took over, the canals were the primary source of transporting goods between factories. Much of the canal district maintains its original industrial design and has been incorporated into the new businesses in the area.

Known by locals as The Rep, the Birmingham Repertory Theater is located near the canals. The venue dates back to 1913 and has an open concept. It is a multifaceted space with two hotels, apartment living, and the headquarters of some of the UK’s top businesses. However, many travelers come here to explore the high-end shopping options and dine at the eighteen restaurants and bars throughout the space. The mega complex was originally an old post office during the Birmingham Canals industrial days, hence the name.

Wander Through The Botanical Gardens

Not far from the canals, travelers will find over 7,000 species of plant life in the Birmingham Botanical Gardens. The gardens are made up of 4 glass greenhouses representing different climates and the plant specimens that grow there. Landscaper John Loudon designed the gardens in 1829. The 15-acre ode to nature and plant life draws tourists to Birmingham every year.
