The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) addressed the longstanding question of whether wrapping luggage in plastic film enhances travel security, according to a recent Travel + Leisure investigation. Despite the growing popularity of luggage wrapping services at international airports nationwide, TSA confirms that this practice offers no special security advantages during the screening process.
Security Screening Remains Unchanged For Wrapped Luggage
TSA spokesperson Lorie Dankers explained to the outlet that plastic-wrapped suitcases undergo the same screening procedures as regular luggage. The agency processes about 1.3 million checked bags daily through advanced 3D X-ray scanners and canine detection units, neither of which is affected by plastic wrapping. The agency reports that the vast majority of checked luggage clears screening without physical inspection, but agents will remove plastic wrapping from any bags that require closer examination.
When TSA agents inspect plastic-wrapped luggage, they cut through the wrapping and place a notice inside to inform travelers of the inspection. While some companies like Secure Wrap offer complimentary rewrapping for TSA-inspected bags, the agency itself does not restore the plastic covering after examination.
Why Travelers Continue To Use Wrapping Services
Travelers choose luggage wrapping for reasons beyond security. Many international travelers, particularly those flying to destinations like Australia, the Maldives, or China, say they wrap their luggage to protect belongings from insecticides or disinfectant sprays used on some arriving flights.
Others use wrapping services to prevent cosmetic damage to luggage exteriors or as a temporary solution for damaged suitcases. Some wrapping companies also offer guarantees against lost or damaged items, though these guarantees typically come with limitations.
The report also highlights growing environmental concerns surrounding the use of single-use plastic for luggage wrapping. As some airports consider limiting these services due to environmental impact, travelers are increasingly turning to alternative protection measures. TSA-approved locks — which allow agents to open and relock bags without breaking them — and reusable luggage covers represent more sustainable options that still address travelers’ concerns about luggage security and protection.
