Following the news of several cases of COVID-19 in the region, a Chinese airport placed in lockdown caused frustration for travelers. Reportedly, many travelers were left stranded by the lockdown in Xishuangbanna airport in the province of Yunnan.
The airport in the busy Yunnan province area went into lockdown on Wednesday morning. Armed officers forced arriving travelers to remain in the terminal. In a video filmed and shared online, angry tourists can be seen raging at armed officers in full hazmat suits. The event filmed by panicked tourists has stunned many online.
“I spent 8,000 RMB ($1102 USD) for a two- hour tour in Xishuangbanna airport, I am really speechless,” one user on Weibo, a popular Chinese social media platform, said after their flight was grounded. The chaos continued to outrage many after details emerged on the Chinese airport placed in lock-down.

According to the Telegraph, China reported a total of 273 news cases as of Wednesday morning. The rise in infections has spread to 27 provinces, according to state media.
In the footage shared widely on social media, officers with machine guns ensure that tourists remain in the terminal. One social media user shared a video displaying the intensity of the scene. Part of the caption describes the sights, including ‘People screaming “are you gonna kill us all?”‘

The videos across social media show tourists confronting the guards as well as some passengers being taken into isolation after their QR code (vaccine passport) turns red. The vehicle that transports these travelers is named the ‘tent of shame’.
