August 2022 has been a busy month for US travelers. With kids returning back to school, families and friends were trying to fit one more vacation in before the end of Summer.
Despite everyone returning to their Fall time routines, folks are still hitting the roads and the air to head out of town. If you’re looking for a place to visit, check out Expedia’s list of the top travel destinations so far this month.
Mount Rushmore
A famous symbol of democracy and freedom in the US, Mount Rushmore was one of the top travel destinations in August. More than 2 million people visit the landmark each year. If you plan on visiting, try visiting during the Fall months to avoid large crowds between 9 am and 3 pm. Mount Rushmore is located in Keystone, SD, and the huge mountainside depicting Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln symbolize the work they did for the nation. There is no entry fee for Mount Rushmore. However, there is a $10 parking fee.
Orlando
Orlando is one of America’s favorite family-friendly destinations. So it’s no surprise that it made Expedia’s list for the month of August. The Florida city is home to a ton of family attractions and amusement parks like Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando. Many travelers say Spring is the best time to visit Orlando. The chances of catching cheaper pricing are more likely during the Spring and you’ll avoid the Summer heat. You’ll also avoid hurricanes that could unpredictably occur during the Fall months. Beyond amusement parks, Orlando has more than 100 lakes and the world’s largest McDonald’s so there’s plenty to see and do.
Baja California
Unbeknownst to most, Baja California is not located in the Golden State. It actually is located in Mexico and split into two parts, Baja Sur and Baja Norte. Baja Sur is definitely the preferred tourist destination. Visitors come here each year to tan on the beaches of Las Cabos and explore the city’s magical Mexican towns. While not as popular, Baja Norte is home to the Napa Valley of Mexico. Keep in mind that a travel advisory went in place recently for Baja California for kidnappings and crime. So make sure you do your research and be aware of your surroundings when traveling to Mexico.
Las Vegas
Las Vegas remains a favorite destination for travelers looking to have a good time in Sin City. Between the gambling, the live shows, the food, and the parties, Vegas is a city many people couldn’t get enough of in August. There’s a little bit of everything for everybody in Vegas. The city also has a wide variety of hotel accommodations so you won’t have a hard time finding a place that fits your needs. Outside of the bright lights, Vegas has a plethora of spas and wellness spots for those looking to unwind instead of turn up. Many people also say flights to Las Vegas are cheaper than a lot of other domestic destinations. So a Vegas getaway may be worth looking into.
Oahu
The allure of the gold-sand beaches of Oahu makes it the most visited of all the Hawaiian islands. While it can get crowded with tourists, many say being surrounded by the beauty of the island makes the crowds worth it. North Shore, Pear Harbor, and Waikiki Beach are all located here. The island has impeccable weather all year round and travelers can’t resist the radiant glow that flows throughout Oahu. You’ll find shopping, nightlife, and restaurants in the island’s capital of Honolulu.
London
London is one of the top destinations for Black travelers year-round. With its bustling shopping districts, coffeehouses, and museums, the city is a fun getaway with a rich history. There are plenty of historic landmarks and monuments to see in London. Some African-American travelers have mentioned they weren’t too fond of the food while visiting the city. However, that isn’t enough to keep thousands of Americans from visiting the city each year.
Baton Rouge
The capital of Louisiana, Baton Rouge is exactly where you need to go for good ole’ Creole cooking and southern hospitality. The city has over 300 years of rich history embedded into its architecture and culture. It has a thriving art scene, family-friendly attractions, and easy access to other cities in the state. Baton Rouge has over 180 parks to explore as well too so it’s a great place for nature lovers, hikers, and bikers too.
Juneau
One of the largest wilderness areas in the US, Juneau, AK may not strike you as a top travel destination. However, travelers have been flocking there all month long. Juneau is definitely for nature lovers and tree huggers. You’ll catch a glimpse of incredible views, experience fishing expeditions, and explore glaciers when visiting the arctic city. Juneau is for the adventurous at heart. So be prepared for a wild ride when you head north for this adventure.
Paris
Of course, the city of love made it on Expedia’s list of most visited cities in August 2022. The romantic French capital continues to be a favorite destination for American travelers. The Eiffel Tower is a must-see on any visit to Paris. But there are plenty of things to see and do when in the City of Light. Make sure you stop by Notre Dame, experience French wine, and drink coffee in a corner-side bistro before wrapping up a vacation in Paris.
Aruba
A happy, Caribbean island with Grade A beaches and perfect weather, Aruba was a top choice for many travelers this August. The island is a unique and beautiful place with plenty of resorts, beaches, and friendly locals. Aruba is near a few other Caribbean islands so it’s the perfect place for island hopping year-round. Whether you’re looking for adventure or wellness, Aruba has everything you need for the vacation of your dreams.
