Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) has initiated a renovation project at Terminal 5 as part of its preparation strategy for the 2028 Olympic Games. Beginning Tuesday, October 21, 2025, the redevelopment triggered operational changes, including the relocation of multiple airlines to different terminals across the airport complex. The extensive renovation plans encompass adding two gates to Terminal 5 and establishing a new post-security connection between Terminals 4 and 5.
According to Los Angeles World Airports officials, the primary objective is to create a more comfortable, efficient, and modernized travel hub capable of handling the anticipated surge in international visitors during the Olympic Games. Per Simple Flying, the project represents a critical component of LAX’s ongoing $30 billion Capital Improvement Program designed to elevate the airport’s infrastructure and service capabilities to world-class standards in time for the global sporting event.
Airline Relocations And Operational Changes At LAX
The renovation necessitates operational adjustments for airlines previously operating out of Terminal 5. JetBlue has relocated to Terminal 1 effective Tuesday, October 21, while Spirit Airlines moves to Terminal 2 beginning Wednesday, October 22. American Airlines will transition to Terminal 4 starting October 28, 2025. These temporary relocations enable construction crews to fully access the terminal for comprehensive renovation work.
“As we take this important step toward transforming LAX, the closure of Terminal 5 marks a pivotal moment in our journey to deliver a world-class airport experience,” stated Doug Webster, Chief Airport Operations and Maintenance Officer at Los Angeles World Airports. “Our goal is to minimize disruption during this transition, and we are working closely with our airline partners to ensure continued operations and smooth travel for our passengers.”
Scope Of Terminal 5 Renovation Project
The Terminal 5 renovation involves complete demolition and reconstruction of the terminal while maintaining its current operational capacity. According to project details from Los Angeles World Airports, the renovated terminal will feature improved functionality, upgraded systems, and enhanced passenger amenities. FOX LA reports that the project is estimated at approximately $1.6 billion. A key improvement includes the new post-security connection that will allow travelers to move between Terminals 4 and 5 without passing through additional security checkpoints.
This connection eliminates the need for passengers to navigate the current narrow tunnels between terminals, creating a more seamless travel experience. The upgraded terminal will also provide direct access to the new Automated People Mover, currently under construction at LAX.
