As anticipation rises for the TV series adaptation premiere of author Candice Carty-Willams’ Queenie, Travel Noire exclusively shares a clip of the U.K. cast’s Brixton-based memories.
The drama series follows the complicated and multilayered life of Queenie Jenkins, a 25-year-old Jamaican-British woman living in south London. As if balancing her two cultures and being a product of the diaspora weren’t enough, Queenie, like every other 20-something, juggles the ever-evolving journey of finding herself and questioning if she was ever lost in the first place.
The show takes viewers on Queenie’s quest for authenticity — whether in her messy love life, with her family, within herself, or as a Black woman facing the world. A synopsis of the show shared with Travel Noire said, “After a messy breakup with her long-term boyfriend, Queenie seeks comfort in all the wrong places and begins to realize she has to face the past head-on before she can rebuild.”
In an exclusive clip shared with Travel Noire, lead actress Dionne Brown highlights the nostalgia she feels in Brixton. She also explains how Queenie‘s roots in the Black-British experience are tied to Brixton. Many of the first Black settlers in London moved to the area when they reached England. Meanwhile, singer-actor Bellah, who plays Queenie’s best friend Kyazike, notes an inextricable multiculturalness and beauty in the south London neighborhood.
“It’s all about culture in Brixton. That’s how I feel. I feel like it’s very, very rich in culture, and I feel like it’s been around for a really long time,” noted Brown.
Where And When Can I Watch Queenie?
Queenie comes to TV screens June 7 via Hulu. According to Deadline, the Onyx Collective eight-episode project is created and executive produced by the book’s author, Carty-Williams, who also serves as the showrunner.
In the caption of an April 30 Instagram post, the author wrote, “It’s about to be a royal summer… Meet Queenie: Journalist. Catastrophist. Expressive. Aggressive. Loved. Lonely… Enough?”
