Partygoers in Ibiza and Mallorca have updated, stricter rules regarding alcohol consumption. According to Euronews, vacationers visiting the region’s most popular areas must better regulate their drinking habits and behaviors. The United Kingdom’s Sky News noted that the “alcohol ban” went into effect starting May 11.

The ban is in effect in the Mallorcan destinations of Llucmajor, Palma, and Magaluf. It also stands in Ibiza’s Sant Antoni.

It’s now illegal to publicly drink outside of legally designated areas. The regulation is in place extending one nautical mile outside the aforementioned cities to manage alcohol consumption of those on or getting to and from party boats. The latest alcohol restrictions reportedly follow up on those previously put in place. In 2020, the cities stopped late-night alcohol sales outside of nightlife establishments like bars, clubs, and restaurants. Retailers are unable to serve alcohol in the party towns between 9:30 p.m. and 8 a.m.

In May 2022, the Drink Business reported that the Balearic Islands’ local government implemented a daily limit of six alcoholic drinks for those at all-inclusive lodgings.

Breaking the rules could result in a fine of up to 3,000 euros, or around $3260. There’s also a 16 million euro government funding package attached to the ban to ensure its enforcement. Even the smallest fine is reportedly 500 euros, or nearly $550.

Why Are The Balearic Islands Issuing Stricter Alcohol Rules?

The Balearic Islands are a province of Spain in the western Mediterranean Sea. The archipelago region is comprised of various islands, including Mallorca (aka Majora), Minorca (aka Menorca), Ibiza (aka Eivissa), Cabrera, and Formentera.

Alcohol restrictions at the popular hotspots are reportedly due to over-tourism and tourists’ rowdy drinking. Euronews noted that the region wants to distance itself from the “sex, sun, sangria” ideal that people envision.
