If the United States’ latest government shutdown continues into the 2025 holiday season, travelers should prepare themselves for possible changes when entering, exiting, and traveling through the country.
Air travel has been heavily impacted by the current government shutdown, which began on October 1. In a country that already struggles with a nationwide air traffic controller shortage, those in the essential federal role are required to work during the shutdown without their scheduled pay, prompting some to call out sick. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents, who are also essential to airport operations, are federal employees working without pay. If the government doesn’t resume operations, staffing shortages will likely further complicate flying for air travelers. Airports across the country have already experienced flight delays and cancellations due to fewer air traffic controllers clocking in. Moreover, fewer TSA agents at their posts will result in longer wait times for passengers going through airport security.
According to CNN, Vice President JD Vance commented on October 30 on what air travel could be like if the shutdown doesn’t end before Thanksgiving. He reportedly said, “It could be a disaster… That’s going to lead to massive delays. We want people to be able to get home for Thanksgiving. We want people to be able to travel for business.”
At that same briefing, Department of Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy added, “Our traffic will be snarled, but it will be a disaster in aviation.”
If travelers want to avoid air travel, their transportation alternatives will depend on their holiday destinations and their time constraints. They may consider trains, buses, or renting a car for a road trip. However, those traveling by road or rail should prepare for potential delays, as those modes of transportation may also experience extra congestion. Those specifically seeking a vacation may consider going on a holiday cruise. Round-trip travel costs will vary depending on the mode of transportation chosen for travel to and from the holiday destination. Making travel-related purchases as far in advance as possible is generally the most wallet-savvy way to go.
Alternative Ways To Enjoy The Holidays Amid The Government Shutdown
Travelers may opt to skip traveling altogether this holiday season. Whether due to convenience or financial constraints, they can still make the most of the festive season.
A staycation is a fantastic alternative to traveling away from home. Consider snagging a nice hotel in your local area. By spending a night or two there, you’ll completely scrap costs on holiday flights and out-of-town dining.
Those who stay at home for the holidays can spend some of their savings on a lovely meal – either for one or to share with loved ones. For Thanksgiving, grocery retailers including Walmart, Aldi, and Costco, among others, are offering meal deals to help prepare a feast on a budget.
Additionally, those skipping travel this year should look into festive local programming and restaurant meal specials. Many cities host family-friendly events where attendees can bask in the holiday spirit. For many, the best traditions often occur at home, including spending time with family, eating well, resting, and watching holiday TV specials, parades, and sporting events.
