I’ve always been the kind of traveler who seeks out the spa before sunrise hikes, the boutique before the mountain trail. For me, adventure usually meant an afternoon of shopping or trying a new facial treatment, preferably followed by a good meal and a plush robe.

But my recent stay at Ka La‘i Waikīkī Beach, LXR Hotels & Resorts, flipped that definition on its head. What began as another luxury getaway quickly became the trip that pushed me far beyond my comfort zone and made me fall in love with the kind of adventure I’d usually scroll past in someone else’s TikTok feed.

Where Luxury Feels Personal

From the moment I arrived, I felt personally welcomed into my new luxury home away from home. Before I even made it to my room, I’d been offered recommendations tailored to the things I love: food, culture, nature. And once I walked into my room, everything shifted. It felt like stepping into the dream apartment I didn’t know I needed. Two bathrooms, a washer and dryer, a spacious living area perfect for unwinding between outings, and a stand-up shower so beautiful I actually looked forward to getting ready every morning. I found myself lingering on the balcony each day, watching Waikīkī wake up below me.

By day two, the staff knew me by name. When I mentioned in passing that I loved poke, they later had it delivered straight to my room. And not just any poke — Foodland, the beloved Hawaiian supermarket locals swear by. It was such a thoughtful nod to the island and to me. And that level of attention made stepping into new experiences feel less intimidating and more exciting.

Saying Yes To A New Kind Of Adventure

Still, it was the outings that truly expanded what I thought adventure could be. Through LXR’s Pursuit of Adventure program, which helps guests immerse themselves in the culture, character, and hidden stories of each destination, I found myself saying yes to things I normally wouldn’t prioritize.

I started with a guided rainforest hike led by a National Geographic-affiliated expert. We walked through a lush, green maze of native plants while our guide shared stories about the land’s history, the significance of certain species, and Hawaii’s ongoing conservation efforts. By the time we reached a lookout point with endless ocean views, I realized I was no longer thinking about the distance or the incline. I was simply in awe of where I was and what I was learning. After I returned to the hotel, my sneakers were whisked away, cleaned, and returned to my room without me asking. It was the kind of thoughtful touch that makes you feel supported in your leap outside of your comfort zone.

But the moments that stayed with me most weren’t only the physically challenging ones. They were the cultural ones. I joined a lei-making class expecting something light and crafty, and instead found myself immersed in the meaning behind each flower and strand. Sitting in a circle with people I had never met before, learning something so rooted in Hawaiian identity, created space for conversations and connections that felt unexpectedly intimate. It reminded me that adventure is not always about the adrenaline. Sometimes it’s about shared learning and cultural understanding.

That sense of connection carried into everything I did that week. Sailing and spotting sea animals, indulging in farm-to-table meals, wandering the beach at sunset, and yes, finding time for shopping. But everything felt grounded in the soul of the island, not the schedule of a visitor checking boxes. It was adventure, but it was also belonging.

A Shift I Didn’t See Coming

Before this trip, I would have told you hiking was not for me. That I preferred vacations with minimal sweat and maximum comfort. But Ka La‘i showed me that the two do not have to exist on opposite ends of the spectrum. Luxury and adventure can live side by side, and when they do, they create a version of travel that is richer, more meaningful, and far more memorable.

That is the beauty of the Pursuit of Adventure program. It does not ask you to become someone else. It simply expands the way you see the world by meeting you where you are and inviting you one step further.

Now, when I think about my next trip, I am not just looking for the best spa menu. I am wondering where I can lace up my sneakers and see the world from a new perspective. And that shift from observer to participant, from comfort to curiosity, is the real souvenir I brought home from Hawaii.
