Republican Florida lawmaker Meg Weinberger has proposed legislation to rename Palm Beach International Airport (PBI) in honor of President Donald Trump.
Weinberger is a state representative for District 94. On X (formerly Twitter), November 3, the lawmaker shared that she’s formally proposed renaming her local flight hub to Donald J. Trump International Airport.
“America’s greatest president deserves an airport that bears his name,” she stated on November 3. “That’s why I have filed legislation to rename Palm Beach International Airport as Donald J. Trump International Airport. A tribute to his extraordinary leadership and hometown roots.”
Notably, Trump was born in and is from New York City’s Queens borough.
What Else Is There To Know About Meg Weinberger’s Proposal To Rename Palm Beach International Airport?
U.S. airports named after presidents aren’t anything new. The most well-known is arguably New York City’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), which is one of the country’s busiest. Many may not know that the airport was originally named New York International Airport, though travelers commonly called it Idlewild. However, after President Kennedy’s assassination in November 1963, the airport was renamed in his honor later that year. Other busy U.S. airports named after presidents are Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA).
Weinberger is a resident of Palm Beach Gardens who’s been living in Florida since 1979. She has been a member of the state’s House of Representatives since early November 2024. In June of that year, Trump reportedly took to Truth Social and endorsed Weinberger’s candidacy, referring to her as “MAGA Meg.”
Earlier this year, Weinberger co-introduced legislation that called for a four-mile stretch in Palm Beach County to be designated “President Donald J. Trump Boulevard.” Local news outlet WPTV reported in September that Palm Beach council members unanimously voted in favor of renaming that area of Southern Boulevard to fit the proposal, which “runs from Palm Beach International Airport to the president’s home at his Mar-a-Lago resort.”
“Presidents leave legacies that endure for generations,” said Weinberger in a follow-up X post shared November 6 about her Palm Beach International Airport renaming proposal. “Palm Beach County is fortunate to be home to the greatest leader of our era. Naming our airport Donald J. Trump International Airport is a fitting tribute, joining the ranks of other presidents honored in history while celebrating @realdonaldtrump’s incredible impact on America.”
