Black American expat and travel agent Sherry Thorpe has been documenting her affordable, fun-filled journey living in Hurghada, Egypt. A July video in which Thorpe says she pays just $100 a month in rent for her accommodations in Hurghada now has over 86,500 views on TikTok. The video is the first in a mini-series the expat has uploaded called “Life in Hurghada, Egypt.”

Within that series, the travel enthusiast noted that she found her affordable accommodations through word of mouth after previously staying in an Airbnb. She also said that Hurghada locals “love” Black people and that she feels safe as a woman. Her other TikTok posts show that she’s been able to pick up fun hobbies, such as swimming with dolphins and belly dancing, in her new city.
