There are so many surfing paradises around the world but we wanted to know, where are some of the best surfing locations for Black surfers? There are so many Black surfers around the world and so little conversation and representation. Here are some locations for Black travelers and surfers in particular to enjoy.
When creating this list we kept in mind location, culture, Black presence in the listed location and, of course, seriously impressive waves. Surf’s up!
1. Panama - Playa Bluff, Bocas del Toro

Possibly one of Bocas del Toro’s most picturesque beaches, what makes this beach even more impressive is how abundant the waves are. Playa Bluff is one of the most known surfing locations in Bocas del Toro, Isla Colón.
2. Nicaragua, Playa Maderas
Travel to Nicaragua is getting more and more popular, and for good reason. Not only will surfers find the land to be greatly beautiful, (unbelievably so) but the surf is truly not to be missed.
A famous surfing beach, Playa Maderas, only 10 minutes’ drive from the popular San Juan del Sur, is sure to impress.
3. Mexico, Puerto Escondido

We’re sure you don’t need us to say it, Puerto Escondido is one of the most famous surfing locations in all of Mexico. Playa Zicatela might just be one of the most loved surfing spots in the country. Black surfers will also enjoy the African-dense location; Oaxaca is home to Mexico’s Afro-Indigenous populations in across La Costa Chica.
4. Martinique, Anse Bonville

Martinique had to make it on the list, not only for its renowned surf spots but also its authentic Caribbean energy. The best location to catch a wave on the island is Anse Bonville at the Plage des Surfeurs, Caravelle Peninsula.
5. Mozambique, The African Kirra

If you’re looking for a sweet surf in Mozambique, you’re in luck. The country boasts beautiful waters and impressive waves. Often described as ridiculously fast and even challenging, The African Kirra is a surf spot for Black travelers craving big, boisterous waves on the continent.
6. Costa Rica, Playa Santa Teresa
A popular surfing destination globally, Costa Rica is laced with great spots for surfers of all levels. The Pacific coast is most loved for its plentiful surfing beaches. We recommend Black surfers check out Playa Santa Teresa and enjoy the rest of the trip checking out the awesome country, heading over to the Caribbean side of the country for an unreal experience too.
7. Nigeria, Lighthouse Left, Tarkwa Bay

Nigeria is growing in popularity for more than its bustling megacity vibes. The likes of Tarkwa Bay will be the best place to experience the local surf scene. Surfers heading to Nigeria are in for a rewarding though intense surf, with some of the best wave breaks that the Atlantic Coast has to offer.
8. South Africa, AL’s, Northern Cape

Amongst the rich sea life and sparse no-mans-land vibe, lies the Northern Cape. South Africa is known for having some impressive waves but none quite come close to those found in the Northern Cape, as attractive as they are risky. Experienced surfers will appreciate this tough and deserted stretch of water.
9. Puerto Rico, Rincón
Known for having some of the best surfing spots in the Caribbean, Puerto Rico is not a country to skip out on. Waiting for the perfect wave in Puerto Rico is an aesthetic we’re here for – with heaps of Black culture and a variety of surf spots, it really doesn’t miss.
Rincón, located on the westernmost point of the island, is a key surfing location.
10. Chile, Pichilemu

A surfing paradise at the end of the world… Pichilemu is the surf scene if ever there was one. Black surfers will be glad to know that we didn’t overlook this Chilean treat. With beaches like Punta de Lobos and Infiernillo becoming the go-to venue for international surfing championships, there is much to fall in love with.
